The Esplanade Archives’ Fire Insurance Maps are one of the most referenced historical resources in the collection. Beginning in the late 19th century, to estimate appropriate insurance premiums many fire insurance companies needed to know the nature and size of buildings, streets, construction materials and proximity to water supplies and fire services. The Charles E. Goad Company did many surveys of Canadian and British cities and produced maps to provide this information. Medicine Hat was one of the cities that sought out their services.
Come see the maps in person in this latest Archives Exhibition. On display now through December 17 in the Gallery Foyer.
