A Painter on the Road
Wednesday July 12 | 10:30 – 11:30 AM
Artist Nicole Bauberger took on an enormous task for her current exhibition. There are two hundred and twenty works in this remarkable series that were painted over the past nine years. During that time, she drove across Canada, from Cape Spear, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia to Inuvik, Northwest Territories, stopping on the side of the road every 50 kilometres to paint a one-foot-square oil landscape from the back of her truck.
Join her for an entertaining and informal presentation focused on the artist’s process and road stories, including photographs, action shots and possibly a ukulele song written to her dog during her travels!
Free of charge. Call us at (403) 502-8777 to let us know you are coming.
Plein Air Landscape Painting
Saturday, July 15, 9AM – 5PM
Join Whitehorse artist Nicole Bauberger in an all-day, outdoor acrylic painting workshop. An avid traveler and road-side painter, Nicole will share how she locates dynamic and captivating compositions on the go. The natural beauty of the South Saskatchewan River and the surrounding downtown landscape will provide plenty of inspiration! Nicole will give tips and tricks for bringing a strong sense of depth and vitality to your paintings through an investigation of perspective, proportion and paint application. Nicole will also share her experience with the basic properties of transparent, opaque, interference and metallic paints and how they come together in the painting process. Beginners and experienced painters welcome!
9:00 AM – Meet Nicole Bauberger in the Esplanade lobby for a quick peek at her exhibition, Get There from Here, before heading outside for a day of painting in the park. Demonstrations will take place at Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park (located along 1st Street and 6th Avenue SE, across from City Hall).
Noon – Brown bag lunch in a nice shady spot. Beverages provided.
4:30 PM – It’s time for those final touches and a discussion of the great work accomplished!
Participants are asked to bring their own paints, brushes, palette and small canvas. A list of recommended materials will be provided upon registration. The Esplanade will provide metallic/interference paints for students to experiment with, as well as water and pots. Note that demonstrations will be done using acrylics, but if you would like to bring your oils for your own piece, Nicole has a lot of experience in that medium and will be happy to work with you.
*PLEASE NOTE* The workshop may move indoors for the afternoon if the warm weather warnings remain in effect that day. Our Discovery Centre will offer a great air conditioned studio space if needed.
Register by July 12th at www.tixx.ca. Registration limited to 15 participants. Workshop fee: $50 including GST
