Visions of the Hunt presents powerful and intriguing imagery of animals and people in modern and contemporary artwork from the Prairies in all media that touch on the themes – and sometimes controversial issues – around the practice of hunting. The exhibition includes contemporary Indigenous artists Brittney and Richelle Bear Hat’s installation about their family’s traditions, Little Cree Women (Sisters, Secrets & Stories) and Adrian Stimson’s ironic Post Modern Bison; Paul Freeman’s astonishing, life-size stags in It’s Only Natural, Marianne Corliss’ startling and sensuous fur portraits of Louis XIV and Queen Elizabeth II, and a suite of delicate historical linocut prints by Illingworth Kerr which are informed by his trapper’s knowledge of animals; amongst a host of other works by predominantly Alberta artists.
