John Asplund’s Robsart

May 20, 2017 - September 16, 2017

‘Uncle’ John Asplund arrived on the flat open lands south of the Cypress Hills in 1910. Like thousands of others of the early twentieth century, he saw an opportunity for his family, to own their land and grow a future from the soil.

Unlike his new neighbours, ‘Uncle’ John was not only a novice farmer. He was also a professional photographer. John Asplund was an active member of the Robsart community that flourished around him, and he was its documentarian. In an era when most photographers were either urban or itinerant, Mr. Asplund recorded the daily life and progress of Robsart.

Some of John Asplund’s photographs have survived through the efforts of the Robsart community and are now part of the holdings of the Esplanade Archives. Through the exhibit ‘John Asplund’s Robsart’ discover the struggles and optimism of prairie life in the early decades of the twentieth century.
