Brigham Young University-Idaho’s premier touring dance group, Dance Alliance, will be performing in Medicine Hat at the Esplanade on July 26, 2013 at 7:00 PM as part of this summer’s Canada/Northern States tour. The company of 35 BYU-Idaho students will participate in a two-week tour themed “The Masterpiece: Dance Inspired by Art”. The Dance Alliance repertoire is unique in that encompasses many genres of dance including ballet, ballroom, swing, tap, jazz, world and contemporary. The company takes pride in its ability to keep its music, costuming and choreography modest and family appropriate. Gary Larsen, the company’s artistic director, said, “Despite coming from a wide variety of dance backgrounds, interests, and specialties, these dancers are brought together to create a diverse dance performance that reflects a love for life and desire to share that love. This variety in dance also allows audience members of all ages and tastes to connect with something in the show. “Dance has a powerful yet subtle gift of communicating meaning in a way that words cannot. It speaks directly to our hearts and allows us to dwell in another world or time for a moment. We hope that our audience will find moments of comfort, joy, reflection, and renewal in the messages we bring through movement.” Since its creation in the early 1970s, the group has performed at various locations across the world, including many countries in Central and South America, as well as more recently in Russia. Last summer, the troupe performed throughout the New England States. BYU-Idaho is located in Rexburg, Idaho, and serves more than 20,000 students from all 50 states and over 40 countries.
